The Holy Bean

Overview

The Holy Bean is an artisan chocolate company whose products and brand are heavily influenced by the Mayan and Aztec cultures. Generally, chocolates come in white, milk, and dark flavors. We aim to provide a chocolate that goes beyond the everyday, and introduces new flavors to your palate. The Holy Bean has three signature chocolates that are created from the flavors and spices traditionally used in Mayan and Aztec culture. The first is Honey, which lends a sweeter tone to the chocolate. The second is Annatto, which makes for a savory chocolate. The third is Chile, which is a perfect balance of spicy and sweet.

Origin

The use of cocoa beans can be traced all the way back to 1500BC, when it was first used by the Olmec people in beverages. The cocoa bean started to play a bigger role in Mayan and Aztec cultures; priests presented cocoa beans as offerings to the gods and served cocoa drinks during sacred ceremonies at royal and religious events. The Mayan's thought of cocoa as the god's food. In the Aztec culture they believed that the creation of the cocoa plant happened when their god Quetzalcoatl descended from heaven on the beam of a morning star carrying a cocoa tree stolen from paradise. The chocolatiers of The Holy Bean feel that the Aztec and Mayan people were on to something. We aim to create the smoothest, high-quality chocolate – chocolate that's fit for the gods and now we have given it to you.

Packaging

Our values of organic ingredients and sustainability are translated into our packaging. We take the discarded husks of the cocoa pods used to make our chocolate to house the chocolate. The actual chocolate is placed in organic 100% cotton bags. The label and origin story paper are all made from recycled paper. After our customers have finished enjoying their chocolate, the cocoa pod and cotton bag can be used again for many different purposes, or be recycled.
